How Often Should I Change My Air Conditioner Filter?

How Often Should I Change My Air Conditioner Filter?

When it comes to keeping your air conditioning unit in tip-top shape, one of the most important things you can do between routine air conditioner maintenance tune-ups is to make sure your air conditioner filter remains clean. The problem is that many homeowners have no idea when they need to change their A/C filter.

Factors to Take Into Consideration

Ultimately, the best thing you can do is to check your air filter on a monthly basis to see if it is dirty. If it is, change it. However, it may be easier for some homeowners to simply look at a number of factors, determine how often their filter normally needs to be changed and set a reminder on their phone or mark a day on the calendar and then change the filter on that day.

If the latter sounds like you, here are the factors to take into consider to help you determine the frequency of changing your air filter:

  • Pets – Pets shed. It doesn’t matter whether you have a dog, cat, bird or a hamster, they all shed some type of hair, feather or dander. As a result, your filter is more likely to clog at a faster rate.
  • Household Occupants – If it’s just you and a spouse living in the home, you can usually get by with changing the filter every few months or maybe even less than that depending on other determining factors. However, if you have several kids or other friends or family living with you, you’ll need to change them more frequently. The more people that live in the house, the more dirt and dust that is flying around, which means that it's more likely your filter is going to get clogged.
  • Local Air Quality/Pollution – Do you live in a remote area where there is little to no traffic? If so, then your air filter may not need to be changed as much due to less pollution contaminating the air quality. Is there construction going on in your area, or do you live on a busy street? If so, then there is a good chance that there are contaminants in the air that will cause your filter to need to be changed more frequently.
  • Allergies – If anyone in the home has problems with allergies, asthma or colds, it is crucial that you keep the air conditioner filter changed very regularly. The more frequently, the better. Usually, it is best to keep it changed monthly to avoid any issues with allergies.

Summary: When Should Your Filter Be Changed
