Use These Tips to Keep Mold and Mildew Out of Your Home

Mold and mildew can be a serious problem for homeowners. They smell and look awful and, even worse, they are bad for your health. And let's not forget that they can cause structural damage to your home!

Mold and mildew infestations are usually a result of moisture problems somewhere in the house. If left untreated, moisture damage and issues with mold and mildew can cause wood to rot, which seriously harms the resale value of your home. The good news is that there are several steps you can take to prevent mold and mildew from invading your home. Take a look at these tips for preventing mold and mildew.

Increase Air Circulation

One of the best ways to keep mold and mildew out of your home is to keep fresh air flowing in. The walls especially need air, so move your furniture a couple inches away from the walls so that air can flow past freely. Open windows, use ceiling and propeller fans and use exhaust fans in the bathroom. Run the A/C regularly during the summer to keep the air cool and fresh.

Seal Air Leaks

Seal your windows, doors and walls with caulk, stripping or other sealants to keep the moist outdoor air as well as mold and mildew spores out of your home.

You can eliminate mold or mildew before it has a chance to start growing by regularly vacuuming, sweeping and dusting your home.

Don't Let Water Collect and Stand

Mop up puddles from spills or leaks right away, and don't let wet laundry, bedding or furniture sit for too long because mold and mildew thrive on moisture. Repair any leaks or water damage as soon as possible.

Clean and Vacuum Regularly

You can eliminate mold or mildew before it has a chance to start growing by regularly vacuuming, sweeping and dusting your home. A little elbow grease can go a long way to prevent mold or mildew problems down the line.

Ventilate Attic and Crawl Spaces

Mold and mildew will often collect in the attic or crawl space because of the warm, humid air that circulates through those areas. Make sure that your attic is properly ventilated so that the warm air can flow out of your home. Cover the dirt floor in the crawl space to prevent moisture from collecting in the dirt. If you discover any standing water in the crawl space, dry it up right away with fans.
