Improve Your Indoor Air Quality with These 6 Tips

Improve Your Indoor Air Quality with These 6 Tips

When the weather begins cooling down, all manner of bugs begin floating around: colds, flu and even viral pneumonia. How can your HVAC system help keep your home's air clean and your family safe from as many illnesses as possible? Controlling your indoor air quality is a good first step towards cutting down on the winter cold and reducing the overall number of germs that like to hide in the winter air. Follow these quick tips and you'll be cutting back on the bugs your family breathes in through your air duct systems.

1. Keep Your Floors Clean

While no one likes to hear it, one of the best ways to maintain indoor air quality is to keep a clean, tidy home that's free of dust mites, allergens and chemicals. Regular vacuuming and mopping can reduce the amount of pet dander and dust mites, as well as the chemical residue that can float around on dust within your home. Door mats inside each entrance point to your home can keep down the overall amount of dirt that's coming in on shoes. Cleaning or replacing the various air filter options within your home will also keep the air clean.

2. Control the Humidity

Humid air is a breeding ground for mold, and when you're able to maintain a lower level of humidity (around 30 to 50 percent) you can fend off many of these microscopic fiends. Dehumidifiers and a good air filter can help keep things under control throughout your air duct system and keep your family breathing freely.

3. Don't Smoke Indoors

Indoor air cleaners can only do so much, and when you smoke indoors it can really put a lot of pressure on your HVAC units. The toxins and chemicals that are released into the air when someone is smoking indoors can get caught in carpeting and furniture. Without a strong support network of air filters, your overall air quality will certainly suffer.

Anything that burns or lets off fuel, such as a gas or wood fireplace, offers a strong potential for putting contaminants back into your HVAC system.

4. Test Your Duct Work for Leaks

Not only does a clean and shiny air duct system provide you with excellent indoor air quality, it can also offer significant savings on your energy bills. Have a professional review your air ducts for leaks on an annual basis to be sure you're not letting warmed air leave your home.

5. Replace Air Filters (At Least!) Once per Year

Air filters can quickly get clogged with dust, pet dander, mold particles and germs. When you replace your air filters on a regular basis you're removing those contaminants from your system completely. Filters are made to protect your family and keep them healthy, so make sure you make this a priority.

6. Ensure Proper Ventilation

Anything that burns or lets off fuel, such as a gas or wood fireplace, offers a strong potential for putting contaminants back into your HVAC system. As the air circulates, you need to ensure that your systems are properly ventilated to push negative particulates outside your home.
