Make HVAC Maintenance a Part of Your Spring Cleaning

Make HVAC Maintenance a Part of Your Spring Cleaning

Your HVAC system has worked hard all winter to keep your family warm and comfy inside and deserves a little TLC before it assumes the task of keeping your home cool for the summer too. Making cleaning the unit a part of your spring cleaning routine is always an excellent idea. Follow these simple maintenance tips to keep your HVAC systems in good shape and running efficiently.

Replace Air Filters

Air filters are designed to remove foreign objects, like dust, pet hair and pollen, from the air so that your unit can operate efficiently. Replacing them in the spring before you start the AC is recommended. If you don't know where your air filter is located, check the diagram of your unit or call your HVAC dealer to find out.  Keep additional filters on hand, as they can get clogged easily and should frequently be changed to keep everything running smoothly.

Check the Ductwork

Ductwork can come loose or deteriorate over time. Visually inspect all your ductwork for any loose joints or rusted areas. Replace missing screws and tighten up loose joints. If you discover rust spots or holes, make a note to have that section replaced as soon as possible. Loose or leaky ductwork will cause your HVAC system to work harder than it should and will increase your energy bill.

The outside of your unit can get dirty or covered with debris, such as old leaves, dirt and plant parts, during the winter. Remove any large items by hand and brush off the unit with a soft brush or old broom to remove cobwebs and other debris.

Clean the Outside Unit

The outside of your unit can get dirty or covered with debris, such as old leaves, dirt and plant parts, during the winter. Remove any large items by hand and brush off the unit with a soft brush or old broom to remove cobwebs and other debris. You can also use the spray attachment on your garden hose to wash the entire unit down and let it dry in the sun. Stubborn spots can be removed with a mild detergent and a scrub brush. Make sure to rinse away the soapy residue as this may provide a sticky film that will collect more dust and dirt.

Have it Serviced

Schedule a regular maintenance visit to have the unit serviced before you begin using the AC. Your HVAC dealer will clean and lubricate all moving parts inside the unit and replace worn parts to keep your system running properly. He can also spot and correct potential problems before they become a major issue. If you need repairs to your ductwork this a great time to get that done, too.
