The Green Way to Clean Your Garbage Disposal

The Green Way to Clean Your Garbage Disposal

Hot summer days can bring out the worst of smells in your home. If you enjoy a natural approach to cleaning and avoid products with harsh chemicals or toxic ingredients, it can be difficult to stay on top of nasty home odors, especially in the kitchen. One area that can have a foul stench is your garbage disposal. Even though you run water through it every day, it doesn’t remove germs and bacteria, unclog the drain or sanitize the unit. Garbage disposals are very useful for keeping your kitchen clean and making cleanups a breeze by disposing of food waste, but you also need to give your garbage disposal some attention if you don’t want it smelling less than fresh. Check out our natural, environmentally friendly tips below to keep your garbage disposal clean and fresh-smelling without the use of harsh or toxic chemicals.

Cut Lemons

This is probably the simplest way to refresh your garbage disposal. Simply cut lemons into quarters, feed them one at a time into the disposal while running water, and turn on the unit. This will help eliminate odors by cleaning and deodorizing your drain. Don’t have any lemons? Any citrus, such as limes or oranges will do. Additionally, the citrus rinds clean the grinding components while the fruity scent provides a fresh smell. So, if you like cocktails, don’t throw out your citrus garnishes, feed them to your garbage disposal.

Baking Soda, Vinegar and Ice

For a fun, fizzy way to clean your garbage disposal, this science project uses common household ingredients to bubble your drain clean. Pour a cup of baking soda into the disposal then follow by adding one cup of white or apple cider vinegar. The combination of the natural ingredients causes a chemical reaction that will bubble and fizz. Add two cups of ice and turn the unit on while running the water. Follow up by pouring a kettle full of boiling water down the drain to loosen any remaining oil or grime.

Ice and Salt

While you may have heard that crushing ice in your garbage disposal sharpens the blades, according to InSinkErator®, this is a myth; most modern garbage disposals do not have blades, they have grinders. However, you can clean your unit effectively by using ice. Pour two cups of ice into the drain and follow with a cup of coarse rock salt or sea salt. Turn the tap on, then power the unit on until all the ice is gone. This mixture helps loosen debris and grime from the grinding elements.
